rScan Expanding and Creating 152 New Jobs in South Bend
rScan, a technology company that empowers individuals to start their own resale businesses by providing sustainable solutions for product returns, today announced the expansion of its headquarters in South Bend. The expansion will create 152 new positions in Indiana, further strengthening the company’s commitment to innovation and growth and making a powerful economic impact on the community.
rScan, which currently has 10 employees, will grow its current operation on St. Louis Boulevard in South Bend to also use 100,000 square feet of space created by the South Bend Chocolate Company’s relocation to a site near the South Bend International airport. rScan will use conditional state incentives of up to $1.2 million to hire and train new employees, as well as infrastructure improvements, and research and development (R&D) to enhance technology platform and drive innovation in sustainability for reselling returned products.
“This investment will help us reduce waste, improve environmental impact and contribute to the economic growth of South Bend,” said rScan CEO Rod Baradaran.
Sikich helped with the expansion project and conducted a comprehensive, multi-state search for new property for rScan, said Jenny Massey, Sikich’s director of site selection and incentives.
“We had already spent dozens of hours looking for appropriate space in and outside of Indiana when we learned the chocolate factory was relocating,” Massey said. “rScan was already sharing space in that building, so we have been able to save tens of thousands of dollars by simply expanding the current footprint. It was remarkable timing.”
Incentives also played a critical role in the decision, Massey said. “The refundable tax credits will help offset tax liabilities, allowing the company to maximize resources, ensure long-term growth in Indiana, and provide value to investors, owners, and employees.”
Baradaran said he was not looking forward to leaving South Bend but felt he had to consider other options to find the most affordable and best deal for his company’s longevity.
“We are so happy to stay and deepen our roots in South Bend,” he said. “This growth reflects the confidence we have in our business model and the support we’ve received from the local community. Indiana has proven to be a wonderful home for our company, and we are excited to continue growing in this thriving business environment.”
To support rScan’s plans to expand in South Bend, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) has committed up to $1,200,000 in conditional tax credits. These credits are awarded as the company meets its hiring targets, ensuring an incentive structure tied to measurable results.
IEDC Chief Strategy Officer Ann Lathrop said the state organization is pleased to play a role in the company’s growth.
"We couldn’t be more pleased to retain rScan as a thriving and environmentally sustainable business,” she said. “Clearly there was competition and for a number of reasons, South Bend and Indiana emerged as the winner. We see this as another testament to Indiana's thriving business environment and talented workforce and look forward to seeing great things from rScan in the future.”
South Bend Mayor James Mueller said the swift replacement of commercial space is a gift to the community.
"We consider rScan’s decision to stay in South Bend a strong endorsement of our community and our talented workforce,” Mueller said. “We look forward to the positive impact this will have on our local economy and are proud to be part of their continued success."
