One Question: Females in the Workplace
Becky Beckman, principal, Gibson, and Rochelle Brown, executive director, LaPorte County Community Corrections, recently participated in a panel discussion, presented by our YPN South Bend group, offering perspectives and advice. Today, both share their thoughts and experiences as it relates to female talent in the workplace to the greater business audience.
What are the benefits to having females in leadership roles?
“Diversity of thought and emotion. Patience and empathy are strong attributes I see women bringing to the table. And, as a woman in marketing, my experiences tend to offer more creative solutions.”

What advice would you give the next generation of female leadership?
“For the group that was able to attend the YPN event, my main take away was “Eat the Cheeseburger!" Message me on LinkedIn, and I will share the full story with you! BUT, the basic premise is this. As a young professional trying to grow in your career, women have a tendency to let others influence decisions. There is this unspoken expectation of how you are supposed to behave and react (or not react) to everything. Do not hold yourself back from doing something you really love or speaking the truth in a hard situation for fear of retribution. You will only be punishing yourself in the long run. Keep a growth mindset!”

What are the benefits to having females in leadership roles?
“Women leaders will paint the future because we are effective problem-solvers, providing imaginative perspectives, creative viewpoints and awareness using a diverse, understanding and trusted lens. Women in leadership roles can close the gender pay gap, provide better mentorships for future women. Our ability to bring open communication to the role helps achieve a better financial outcome for organizations. I believe females ignite the impact in our workplaces because we bring the growth mindset along with the confidence.”

What advice would you give the next generation of female leadership?
“Follow your dreams because it is possible! You will never know if it doesn’t work if you don’t even try. Write the vision and make it a plan! Find people who are doing what you are desiring to do, and squeeze all the information out of them (Ask them to be your mentor). Educate yourself thoroughly. Lastly, persevere past all the trials and tribulations because they are coming!”
