Mental Health Technicians (MHTs) at Oaklawn, Misahwaka Campus, provide direct care to youth in a 24/7 residential facility. Youth come to Oaklawn because they face behavioral, emotional or developmental challenges. Sometimes, these challenges are severe, but we believe that recovery is always possible. Oaklawn provides a therapeutic environment for youth to address their challenges, with the ultimate goal of reintegrating with their home communities. MHTs are an important and valuable part of the treatment team, and primary duties include:
-Helping youth maintain daily routines
-Teaching skills and providing support as youth learn healthy ways to cope and relate with others
-Creating a therapeutic environment that facilitates healing
MHTs work with other members of the treatment team, including care facilitators, skills trainers, therapists, nurses, a psychiatrist, a primary care doctor, supervisors, a chaplain and others, to ensure the plan of care for each youth is followed. MHTs help observe the youth’s behavior and patterns, providing documentation and recording necessary data. They maintain appropriate, professional and therapeutic relationships with youth. They may also interact with families, significant others and social services representatives.
Common behaviors our programs address include: complex mental health challenges, conduct disorders, trauma-induced behaviors, substance use, self-harming behaviors, sexually maladaptive behaviors, runaway risk, suicide ideation, involvement with the court system, problems with authority, poor boundaries, intellectual and developmental delays, depression, anxiety and unsafe/unmanageable behaviors.
